Clear Skies - Creative Challenge #261

Sometimes my mood can be overcast

I really cannot say exactly why

Perhaps my thoughts turn to the past

When that happens I smile and sigh.

My mood is often like the wind

I wait and it changes by and by

My mood is subject to a whim

When that happens I smile and sigh.

I can’t see that it makes any sense

I soon welcome back the Clear Skies.

I return to the present tense

When that happens I smile and sigh.

This is a style of poetry called a Kyrielle It is a French form of rhyming poetry written in quatrains (a stanza consisting of 4 lines), and each quatrain contains a repeating line or phrase as a refrain (usually appearing as the last line of each stanza). Each line within the poem consists of only eight syllables. There is no limit to the amount of stanzas a Kyrielle may have, but three is considered the accepted minimum.

Some popular rhyming schemes for a Kyrielle are: aabB, ccbB, ddbB, with B being the repeated line, or abaB, cbcB,

Under the……….Creative Challenge 260

Under the tree for shade I will go
I go under the waves to swim
I fall under the spell of cute girls
Under the law we reap what we sew

Under the porch is fun this I know
Discoveries there can be grim
We can scrunch down and roll up in curls
Even in the dark some things still grow

I am taking my girl to a show
The odds of a kiss seem pretty slim
She deserves a necklace made of pearls
I don’t have that much money to blow

Under the tree for shade I will go
I go under the waves to swim
I fall under the spell of cute girls
Under the law we reap what we sew

My entry this week is a style of poem called La’Tuin, a poetic form which consists of 4-line stanzas with an 'abca, abca' rhyme scheme that is consistent throughout each stanza. The first stanza is repeated at the end of the piece. It contains a minimum of 4 stanzas, with no maximum length limit.

A strict syllable count of 9/8/9/8 is required per stanza.

In-Depth Explanation of rhyme:

Lines 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16 etc., all rhyme - this is the 'A' rhyme.
Lines 2, 6, 10, 14 etc, all rhyme - this is the 'B' rhyme.
Lines 3, 7, 11, 15 etc, all rhyme - this is the 'C' rhyme.
The La'Tuin is named after A'Tuin, a giant turtle from the Diskworld series. A turtle is a symbol of Mother Earth

The Key ... Creative Challenge #259

Urgency

It is imperative that I go in

But I can’t seem to find the key

My inability to enter could be a sin

It is imperative that I go in

I can’t live with what might have been

I hate to be crass, but I really have to pee

It is imperative that I go in

But I can’t seem to find the key.

This week on Creative Challenge  I am going to introduce the triolet (TREE-o-LAY), which has 13th century French roots linked to the rondeau or “round” poem.

A diagram of the triolet would look like this:

A (first line)
B (second line)
a (rhymes with first line)
A (repeat first line)
a (rhymes with first line)
b (rhymes with second line)
A (repeat first line)
B (repeat second line)

Memory ... Creative Challenge #258

This week marks a return to the old Multiply Days when I used to write my weekly contribution using a different style of poetry each time.  To start things off, this is a Pantoum

Some things we commit to memory

I remember his gentle hands

He would squeeze my shoulder and dry every tear

He taught me how to tie my own tie

I remember his gentle hands

He taught me how to sift the sand

He taught me how to tie my own tie

He was funny, even when he didn’t try

He taught me how to sift the sand

His presence made me feel so grand

He was funny, even when he didn’t try

He would say, “Now’s the time .. do or die!”

His presence made me feel so grand

I guess I loved him, my Old Man

He would say “Now’s the time .. do or die!”

He said “Always tell the truth, never lie.”

I guess I loved him, my Old Man

I’m proud that I am wearing his brand

He said “Always tell the truth, never lie.”

Pretty good advice as time goes by.

Some things we commit to memory

No matter what happened,  I did not fear

He would squeeze my shoulder and dry every tear

Fun -- Creative Challenge #257

<Come along then me hearties and I’ll tell ye a tale

Of the great adventures when travel was by sail

We sailed round The Horn with Cap’n Jack in ‘75

We returned to Hafnarfjörður only half still alive

One sight of such a coast will cause a landsman short breath.

He will dream for a week about shipwrecks, peril and death.

We had the misfortune of resistance from the Chileans

We said, “Just take our gold and we will be leavin’”

Lord forgive me, but you know this to be a flat lie

If you try to take our gold every one of you will die.

The fight was on and no one begged for quarter

Many died by the sword, many others in the water.

When the fighting was over we broke out the rum

We celebrated our survival and had a bit of fun.

Our celebration was quite merry and genuine

I even saw a sailor dancing with a penguin.
