To Fail is to Weep

On those who do what I cannot, my praise I lavish
When all my efforts still fail, I am immersed in anguish.
My attempts at the Yo-Yo were weak and childish
It seems even my Ma thought my efforts were foolish

Even in politics my leanings tend to be leftish
No hawks in my loft, I am extremely dovish
When I hear words that sound pretty warish
I will say, “That is nonsense, pure rubbish!”

Learning to play guitar was at one time my fetish
I attacked that thing with the fever of a dervish
I even wore a bandana which often was reddish
Unfortunately the sound turned out to be hellish.

The Cello, I thought, was where I could embellish
The dog it turns out was my biggest fanish
He would sit at my feet and his tail he did swish.
He would cry and moan in a style most doggish.

Mr. Ma said, “It appears your fingers are too fattish.”
No subtlety from him, he was in fact quite brutish.
I asked Mr. Santana, but he was even more cliquish.
It seems to me they were both extremely selfish.

So they combined their efforts and together did flourish
It made both my guitar and me gently weep with joyish.

Gumbo Time

I had an envie for some gumbo so I stopped at the market and picked up everything I needed.  I broiled 2 or 3 lbs of boneless skinless chicken breasts, 1 or 2 lbs of smoked sausage, which I chopped up and added along with  a big can of Rotel, 2 or 3 cans of diced, sliced, smashed tomatoes, plenty of Tony’s Creole Seasoning, a big thing of chicken stock, some chicken bouillon, a package of frozen okra and enough water to fill a 3 gallon kettle. I let that simmer for several hours, and then served it over hot rice, after sprinkling just a bit of filé on top.

I was in heaven!

Naturally, there was a lot left over, so I left it in the pot and took the whole thing out and sat it on my Weber Grill to cool overnight.

It was supposed to get down to 27 deg last night, so I figured the critters would all be hibernating some place.

Much to my surprise, when I got up this morning, I looked out in the yard and there were 4 raccoons all wearing Mardi Gras beads and dancing the Fais Do Do.

When I went out to see what was going on, they put their little hands up in the air and started shouting “Throw me something mister!”

Just my luck that I would have Cajun Raccoons living in the woods behind me. I am just grateful that none of them asked to come in and use the bathroom.

Creative Challenge: Thingamajig

At one time I owned a Thingamajig, it was incredibly sweet but it never was rotten.
It was so very many years ago and I have searched my mind for what I have forgotten.

If I remember correctly it had three purple switches, a green framice and a large gold knob.
His ancestry was uncertain, but he had a distant cousin I  think his name was Thingamabob.

He was rather tall, as I recall, my impression was he was built somewhat strangely
I could never pronounce his name, I repressed it, so I just called him”Thingy.”

In our later years we became enamored with vocal music and began singing.
We were quite the rage, a magnificent duet composed of just me and Thingy.

One day he met a beautiful young creature nibbling coyly on a fresh picked fig
His heart soared like a hot air balloon and he began to dance a funny little jig

They fell mad passionately in love, and believe me I don’t mean maybe
They were soon wed and I became the uncle to three new Thingababies.

Creative Challenge: Harmony

When I see a tree I didn’t create, I think “Why not leave him be?”

All I want from him is shade and oxygen, so we
live in harmony.

I witness the fawn with his specked coat so young, beautiful, and free

I don’t need his meat,  I don’t want his fur perhaps we can live in harmony.

I see the children so young playing their games with utmost glee

I have no need to gun them down, please let them all live in harmony.

I see a man with authomatic weapons, though why is a complete mystery

There is no need for these weapons, and I ask that we can live in harmony.

I listen to the orchestra performing great pieces playing notes so beautifully

Some members are playing the lead, others live just  to play the harmony

I hear some people from near and far, Iranian, Palestinian, and Israeli

Most of them want a world of peace so they can live  in harmony.

When we ask our Higher Power, whatever he may be, for personal serenity

Would it be too much to ask for maybe just a little worldwide harmony?

Happy Mardi Gras!

I've got two King Cakes, about 3 gallons of gumbo, a big pot of Red Beans and Rice, a couple of bottles of Root Beer with foam on top ... lots of "chank-a-chank" music on the stereo, some beads and doubloons to throw around (yesterday in anticipation I swept them up off the floor from last year)

Here is some footage of my very first Mardi Gras .. watch for the guy shaking the tambourine at the 4:36 mark of the video.

Thanks to my cousin Kathy in San Diego for digging this film out of the family archives and to my other cousin Marcus for posting it on You Tube.
