Waiting: Creative Challenge #242

It was love at first sight and he was smitten

She came softly to his arms like a fuzzy kitten

There was no question there would be matrimony

It was only a decision of when it would be.

When his country called he marched off to join the fight

Leaving her home alone through those interminable nights.

But Johnnie came marching home once more and then

They started their lives together, just the two of them.

They were blessed with the arrival of Johnnie Junior

And they all lived in happiness without care or fear.

But things went wrong, as they sometimes will

And Junior went marching up Hamburger Hill.

They said he was brave, he sacrificed himself to save others

A handful of medals and a folded flag for a grieving mother

It is said the worst of men must fight, and best of men must die

That’s what they say alright, but they never say why

They went on together side by side and hand in hand

Working hard to make a living from the crops on their land.

Johnnie now has just a small piece of terrain

A place of old memories and unceasing pain

Johnnie tends his land quite faithfully, old that he is

It might not seem like so very much, but it is his

Mother now lies there with  Junior, it was her choosing

There is nothing left now for Johnnie but the unbearable waiting.
